Bryan Price has agreed to wash his mouth out with soap, but he still hasn't changed his tune about the media. The Cincinnati Reds skipper believes the beat reporters that cover his team shouldn't share any information that gives opposing teams an advantage. He believes that so much that Monday he conveyed that sentiment with 77 F-bombs.
In the requisite apology, which the Reds released Tuesday via Twitter, Price says he stands by the message but he's sorry for the language:
The apology comes not 12 hours after Price's epic tirade spread all over the Internet and immediately joined Lee Elia and Tommy Lasorda in the manager meltdown Hall of Fame. His target was Cincinnati Enquirer reporter C. Trent Rosecrans, who Tweeted after Sunday's game that All-Star catcher Devin Mesoraco couldn't pinch hit because he wasn't with the team. Note, he reported this after the game.
Nonetheless, Price fumed Monday about how the media reporting every bit of info about the Reds will help opponents prepare for games. The core issue here is that Price sees the media as part of the organization that's under his thumb (he called the beat writers "our own people" at one point).
The apology helps the Reds smooth things over with fans back in Ohio who may be less likely to buy a ticket to a game because the manager has a potty mouth, but it doesn't address the core issue. The job of a beat writer isn't to help a pro sports team win games or even look good. That's never been the point of the job and it never will be.
