NEWS BRAZIL 2014 : Memphis suspends 12 unidentified players after Miami Beach Bowl fight

Memphis has penalized 12 players after the fight at the end of the Miami Beach Bowl with BYU. However, none of the players issued various suspensions were identified in Memphis' announcement of the penalties on Tuesday.

The Tigers and Cougars fought at the end of Memphis' 55-48 win in double overtime. According to the school statement, the range of penalties includes a two-game suspension.

<a href="http://ift.tt/1BBfmzw">From Memphis' statement via TigerSportsReport.com:</a> <blockquote> Following a thorough review, the University of Memphis, in cooperation with American Athletic Conference Commissioner Mike Aresco, has determined and apportioned stern and appropriate penalties for 12 members of the football program who participated in unsuitable behavior. Additionally, player representatives from Memphis and BYU will participate in a conference call where formal apologies will be issued on behalf of both institutions. </blockquote> <blockquote>"I want to thank BYU for working with us to achieve not only accountability from this unfortunate event, but also helping our teams continue to grow and develop as young men, consistent with the high expectations held by both our universities, along with the high standards of sportsmanship established by the NCAA and American Athletic Conference," said University of Memphis President M. David Rudd.</blockquote> <blockquote>The penalties include, but are not limited to, suspension from team activities (including practices, scrimmages and game competitions ranging from one half to two games), mandatory anger-management counseling and community service hours, and additional team-regulated punishments at the discretion of head coach Justin Fuente and his staff. Individual suspensions from game competition will be announced in conjunction with the first football game of the 2015 season.</blockquote> Our guess is that offensive lineman Chase Johnson is one of the 12 players suspended. Memphis kicker Jake Elliott hit a 55-yard field goal to send the game into the second overtime. The win gave Memphis its first 10-win season since 1938.
