Jimmie Johnson collapses following Richmond race, treated for dehydration

RICHMOND, Va. - Immediately after the conclusion of the Federated Auto Parts 400, Jimmie Johnson climbed out of his car and slumped against it, eventually sliding to the ground. He was assisted by NASCAR medical officials to a waiting cart, and was immediately driven to the infield care center. He entered the infield care center via a wheelchair, but was conscious.

About 45 minutes later, NASCAR officially announced that Johnson was being treated for dehydration. Soon afterward, reports indicated that Johnson was in much better health.

Temperatures in race cars can reach 140 degree in normal operation. Race-time temperatures at Richmond were in excess of 90 degrees. Most drivers use some form of coolant system to maintain their body temperature; Johnson did not say anything on his radio about problems with that system during the race.

Brad Keselowski won the race, the final one in NASCAR's regular season. Johnson finished eighth and is seeded fourth heading into the Chase.
