Kentucky QB Reese Phillips suffers ruptured Achilles

Sep 6, 2014; Lexington, KY, USA; Kentucky Wildcats quarterback Reese Phillips (12) before the game against the Ohio Bobcats at Commonwealth Stadium. (Mark Zerof-USA TODAY Sports) The Kentucky depth chart at quarterback took a hit on Wednesday.

The team confirmed that redshirt sophomore quarterback Reese Phillips ruptured his Achilles tendon during a workout and will miss all of spring practice. However, according to the Herald-Leader, the team believes he could potentially return in the fall.

Phillips was the Wildcats’ No. 2 quarterback behind Patrick Towles in 2014. In three games, Phillips completed 2-of-9 passes for 45 yards with an interception.

His injury leaves the Wildcats with just two healthy quarterbacks when spring practice begins on Saturday morning – Towles and highly-touted redshirt freshman Drew Barker.

Towles threw 2,718 yards, 14 touchdowns and nine interceptions in 12 starts last season. Barker was questioned recently for his role in a bar fight, but has not been charged.

Former Kentucky starter Maxwell Smith, an All-SEC Freshman selection in 2012, graduated in January and transferred to San Diego State, further limiting UK’s depth at quarterback.

Wildcats head coach Bob Stoops said the competition for the starting role is open. As of now, the competition is down to two men based on sheer numbers.
