Priority Pickups: Greivis, Nikola and another push for K.J. McDaniels

If, like me, you assembled a fantasy portfolio that left you unusually vulnerable to a DeMar DeRozan injury, then you've no doubt already scooped up this first dude...

PG/SG Greivis Vasquez, Tor (33 percent owned)

Vasquez has started three straight for the Raps, with impressive enough results. He's averaging 16.0 points, 5.7 assists and 2.0 threes per night, with a steal in each game. At 30-plus minutes per, you'll enjoy Vasquez. His numbers may not quite reach 2012-13 levels, but he'll be plenty useful across multiple categories. DeRozan is likely down for 4-5 weeks, so Vasquez is something better than a short-range pickup. He has a pair of four-game weeks upcoming, too.

SG/SF K.J. McDaniels, Phi (43 percent owned)

OK, it's a little weird that McDaniels remains so widely available. We've written him up before, as has pretty much everyone else. It's tough to argue with his recent production:

KJ's game log

We're not talking about an all-world shooter here — he went 2-for-9 from the arc in Wednesday's win — but McDaniels is filling the stat sheet pretty much every night. The kid has blocked 11 shots over his last five games. He's averaging 1.4 blocks per game for the year, which ranks top-20 in the league. If you drafted bigs who don't pile up defensive goodies — guys like Z-Bo, Bosh and Blake — then McDaniels can certainly help cover your roster blemishes.

SF/PF Nikola Mirotic, Chi (28 percent owned)

As of this writing, Mirotic actually leads this season's rookie class in Player Efficiency Rating (16.6), and yet somehow he didn't even rate a mention in this clip...

I mean...c'mon, fellas. Is it the drifter's beard that makes you doubt him? Perhaps. Whatever your expectations had been for Mirotic, he's clearly exceeded them, emerging as a useful rotational piece for the Bulls. He did not appear comfortable with the quickness and physicality of starting-caliber NBA players during early preseason action, but he's adjusted well over the past month. (OK, maybe he wasn't totally ready for this Kemba Walker cross, but, generally speaking, he's been solid.)

Mirotic has seen 20-plus minutes in seven straight games, reaching double-digits in scoring six times during that stretch. He's also averaging 8.4 boards, 1.4 threes and 1.4 blocks (and 8,000 shot-fakes) over his last seven, while shooting respectable percentages. It's fair to say that he's benefiting statistically from Taj Gibson's multi-game absence, sure, but you have to assume the Bulls would love to dial back the minutes for Pau Gasol and Joakim Noah. Gasol has played 86 minutes over his last two games, which seems less than ideal. It's easy to see a path to consistent minutes for Nikola.

SG Ben McLemore, Sac (31 percent owned)

McLemore doesn't offer much beyond points and threes (and occasional filthy highlights ), so he's not for everyone. But he's seeing 38-41 minutes per game, knocking down 40.0 percent of his three-point attempts and shooting 87.0 percent from the line. He can help, plus he plays four next week.

PF/C Marreese Speights, GS (28 percent owned)

Mo is averaging something like 197 points per 36 minutes to this point in the season (no, it's actually 28.2), which hardly seems sustainable. And yeah, the looming return of David Lee (hamstring) is a worry. But Speights is chasing shots and points whenever he's on the floor (21.3 FGA/36), and he's shooting at a 54.7 percent clip. Just look at this ridiculousness . He's rebounding at a respectable rate, too. Mo can surely help over his next three games (at Chi, at Min, vs. Hou), which takes us through Wednesday. At that point, we can reevaluate, based on fresh Dubs news.
