Man sentenced for burglarizing home of Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops

Nov 8, 2014; Norman, OK, USA; Oklahoma Sooners head coach Bob Stoops reacts to a call in action against the Baylor Bears during the second half at Gaylord Family - Oklahoma Memorial Stadium. (Mark D. Smith-USA TODAY Sports) A year and a half after the home of Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops was burglarized, one of those responsible was sentenced to jail time on Monday.

According to the Norman Transcript, 22-year-old Corey McCarty and a male juvenile accomplice stole “cash, a phone, credit cards, keys and vehicle” from the Stoops family home in June 2013 while the family was sleeping. McCarty received a “10-year suspended sentence with nine months to serve in country jail” in Cleveland County (Okla.) district court. He was convicted on charges of first-degree burglary, larceny of an automobile and two counts of unauthorized use of a credit card.

Stoops and his wife Carol opted not to appear in court, but did issue a statement.

"Our lives changed forever after waking up to what was supposed to be like any other day,” the statement read in part. “We first noticed that the back door was ajar, then quickly saw that the bolts had been taken out of our gate, allowing it to manually swing open. We were asleep downstairs while our three children slept upstairs while the two men went through our house."

The two perpetrators were captured on surveillance video trying to use the credits cards. Additionally, the vehicle “was later located with the stolen keys.”

McCarty was detained several days later in Oklahoma City.

Per the Transcript:

While dispersing a party in Oklahoma City several days after the incident, police were told that McCarty and his friend discussed the incident at the party. McCarty was detained by Oklahoma City police and later transported to the Norman Police Department, where he was interviewed, the affidavit said.

During the interview, McCarty confessed to the crimes and was “apologetic,” the affidavit says.

In its statement, the Stoops family described the lost sense of security the incident has created.

"It is a crime to no longer feel safe in your own home as they stole our sense of security, peace and happiness in our home. Our lives would have been changed forever," the statement said. "We do not know if they had weapons, but for two people so bold to enter a home where they knew people were sleeping, it is a strong possibility.”
