Maybe the NFL's experiment with longer extra points is revealing after all.
Carolina Panthers kicker Jason Gay is the answer to the trivia question — for you super-obscure folks — of which kicker was the first to miss a 33-yard extra-point attempt in the preseason. It happened after a brilliant Kelvin Benjamin touchdown catch on the first play of the second quarter against the Buffalo Bills.

Not to be outdone, doing his best John Carney impersonation, New Orleans Saints kicker Shayne Graham botched his first 33-yard XP try, too, in the game against the St. Louis Rams, clanging the upright.
Gay is a punter by trade, and Graham Gano almost certainly will be the Panthers' kicker. Graham has little excuse. He's in a battle with Derek Dimke for the Saints' kicking job and can't afford these kinds of shanks.
The NFL will go back to the 20-yard attempts in in next week's games. Might be interesting to see if this experiment leads to something further at some point, though.
