Jerry Jones: 'We would make a roster spot' for Josh Brent

The Dallas Cowboys have gone out of their way to support Josh Brent, their former defensive tackle who was convicted of intoxication manslaughter following a car accident that left teammate Jerry Brown Jr. dead, and the team is prepared to support him yet again now that his jail sentence is over.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said if Brent is reinstated by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, the team will make sure there's a roster spot for him.

“We wouldn’t have it today but we would make a roster spot,” Jones told the Dallas Morning News.

The Morning News said Brent will meet with Goodell on Thursday.

Brent was released last week from a drug and alcohol rehab facility. He was allowed to spend the last 45 days of his 180-day jail sentence there.

The Brown family has forgiven Brent, and he attended Brown's funeral with the family, and the Cowboys have followed that lead. The Cowboys have publicly supported Brent, including letting him on their sideline for a game a little more than a week after he was charged in 2012.

Now they're going to let him back on the team after his jail sentence, assuming the commissioner reinstates him. Brent's agent Peter Schaffer said Brent wants to continue his career.

"Good judgment tells you, let this happen on the commissioner’s time,” Jones said, according to the Dallas Morning News. “I don’t want to be presumptuous. He looks and should look at all discipline situations straight to the player and the individual and the situation and I know that for a fact, so the answer is no, I wouldn’t dare ask him to hurry up his judgment in that area.”
